Adelphi University Intern, STRONG CHANGE
“Everybody's at war with different things. I'm at war with my own heart sometimes." “Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies while still alive.” “Never surrender." --- Tupac Shakur.
These quotes stick out to Emile because our youth deal with death and seeing peers and people around them being killed to the point where it starts to kill their spirit and devour their futures. The self-doubt that develops after being exposed to constant negativity can be worse than death.
Emile grew up in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, NY with his mom and sister. Emile admits he wasn't the best child but I always recognized the value of a good education. Seeing how many kids are deprived of a good education because of the extensive violence in their environment is what interests Emile to intern at STRONG. Through his involvement in STRONG programs, Emile wishes to help kids see a future beyond what's in front of them.
Emile embarked on his social work education at Nassau Community College which is when he initially interned at STRONG. He graduated from NCC with his Associates in 2016 and immediately enrolled in the BSW program at Adelphi University. When given the opportunity to return to STRONG to intern again he quickly jumped on the chance. Emile is scheduled to graduate in May 2018.
Emile is currently involved with a student organization at Adelphi University called S.W.A.G. (Social Work Action Gateway), a social work group started by STRONG’s founder, Sergio Argueta. SWAG is an undergraduate student organization where “undergrads truly call the shots, tackling social issues and organizing activities both on and off campus.”
