Dr. Laura Lustbader
Secretary, Member of Board of Directors
Laura Lee Lustbader is a lifelong educator, retired from her last position of twenty years with the Board of Cooperative Educational Services of Nassau County (Nassau BOCES). During her tenure at BOCES, her work focused on and addressed the needs of students and families who, for the most part, live in Long Island’s “high needs” communities and attend struggling schools. Her main areas of interest were parent-child early education (birth-age five years), the education of children who are homeless, and substance abuse, violence prevention, and social/emotional skills development with students and staff.
During the first half of Laura’s career, she was a teacher at the middle- and high-school levels of youngsters who required more individualized attention to accomplish their educational goals. During those first twenty years, she earned two Masters Degrees from New York University, one in American History and the other in Education Administration. She also became a principal of a small, private alternative school in Manhattan where she continued to teach, and work closely with parents, teachers and students to create a welcoming and open learning environment that would serve the needs of the students who attended there.
In the natural course of time, it became clear that a change within the field of education would be beneficial and re-invigorating both for Laura and for the school, and so as she completed her Doctorate in Secondary Education Administration at N.Y.U., she began the career at Nassau BOCES that would
continue to inspire and enrich Dr. Lustbader through the end of her career and beyond. Today, Laura remains engaged with education and young people through her volunteer tutoring via Family Service League, as a member of the Advisory Council of I Have a Dream, Newark, as a new member of the Board of S.T.R.O.N.G., and as the lead person for the Safe and Supportive Schools and Communities Consortium, a bi-county gang and youth violence prevention organization.
Laura joined S.T.R.O.N.G.’s Board of Directors in 2013.
