Cristo Alfaro, BA
Intervention Counselor, STRONG University (Brentwood) “Power in defense of freedom is greater than power on behalf of tyranny and oppression." - Malcolm X Cristo was born in El Salvador during the civil war. Out of fear of being killed, Cristo's mother and uncles decided to immigrate to the USA when he was 3 years old leaving Cristo and his sister behind. Cristo, his sister and mother were finally reunited when he was 9 years old. Cristo was raised in Hempstead, Long Island during the crack era. He witnessed many friends join gangs, die because of gang life and many imprisoned due to the lifestyle. Watching the devastation around him helped convince Cristo that he wanted better for himself. He was committed to graduating high school and going to college. And he did just that. After high school, he went on to obtain his bachelor's degree in psychology from Hofstra University. It was at that point that Cristo decided to dedicate himself to working with youth within the community to serve as a role model. Cristo originally joined the STRONG family in 2005. After a brief break, rejoined our family in April 2018 and is currently working with youth and families in the Brentwood community. |
