Emely Mejia, BA
Elementary Youth and Family Engagement Specialist (Uniondale)/
“Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end”
– Robin Sharma
Emely grew passionate about helping others when someone close to her family was arrested and her family did not know how he could have committed such a crime. This incident led Emely to go to John Jay College of Criminal Justice to pursue a degree in Forensic Psychology. Her original plan was to help the mentally ill that are incarcerated. But the more she studied the criminal justice system; it changed her way of thinking. Emely realized how easily children are taken advantage of by systems that are put in place to “help” them but actually fail them.
Being that she grew up in Uniondale, Emely started volunteering at S.T.R.O.N.G. in the Elementary Program shortly after graduating from John Jay. This was her way of givin g back to her community. Working at S.T.R.O.N.G. has reaffirmed her interest in pursuing a Master’s Degree in Social Work. She is thankful for her family for being her support system; She looks forward to being a role model/mentor for the children that she encounters who have not had the same opportunities.
Emely joined the S.T.R.O.N.G. family as an Administrative Assistant/Youth and Family Engagement Specialist in January 2018.
Emely enjoys spending time with her friends and rollerblading.
