Judith A. Hynes
Member of Board of Directors
Principal of Specialized Schools
Regional Schools & Instructional Programs
Originally hired by Nassau BOCES as the Principal for the Seaford Academic Center, Judith Hynes brought with her 20 years of experience as a teacher, assistant principal and principal from New Hampshire and Vermont. As the principal at Seaford, Ms. Hynes oversaw the Teenage Parenting Program (TAP), the SpringBoard GED program, the Twilight Alternative Program (PATHS) and the English Language Alternative Program (ELAP) before the closure of the building in 2010.
Ms. Hynes was then appointed as the Principal of the Regional Summer School and the Twilight Alternative High School programs for the retiring founder, Carolyn Yohannes. Running these two programs has continued the focus of Ms. Hynes’ career as she is a huge proponent of finding opportunities for students who do not fit into the mold of the traditional high school student. Offering support and a variety of options for the 56 school districts that work with Nassau BOCES, Ms. Hynes has become the face of Alternative Education for Nassau BOCES. The growth of these two programs has caught the attention of many districts who specifically seek Ms. Hynes’ advice and counsel in looking for alternatives for their students.
Serving over 24,700 students in the Regional Summer School program in 2016, Ms. Hynes and her dedicated team have developed a number of initiatives to support the growing needs of the communities in Nassau County. The Regional Scoring Center (RSC) was designed in the summer of 2013 to bring together Master Graders to grade the Summer Regents Exams in order to increase efficiency and to eliminate any grading discrepancies. Having graded over 20,000 exams in the four years since its inception, the RSC has become one of the main functions of the summer school program.
Another initiative that has grown under Ms. Hynes’ direction has been the County-wide Curriculum Committees. This group of hand-selected educators from across Nassau County, has developed the summer school curriculum for all Regents courses. “Having the most successful summer school teachers come together to develop a curriculum that will improve the outcomes for thousands of students across our County is a phenomenal project to oversee. We are helping students to achieve their goals and to move on or catch-up with their cohort so they can graduate on time.”
Ms. Hynes has an Advanced Certificate in Human Resources Management from Cornell University; a Certificate in Advanced Graduate Studies in Administration and Supervision from the University of New Hampshire; a Master’s Degree in Marketing and Business Education from Bowling Green State University (Ohio); and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education and an Associate’s Degree in Accounting from Southern New Hampshire University.
Judith joined the STRONG Board of Directors in 2017.
