Suffolk STRONG CHANGE (South Country/Wyandanch)
“To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived – that is to have succeeded.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Luis was born in Puerto Rico but raised in Brentwood, NY by his two parents, along with his sister and grandmother. Growing up in Brentwood showed Luis at an early age that he wanted to make a difference in underserved communities. He wanted to somehow give the youth from areas similar to where he was raised the opportunities that so many youths in his community never got. Having the chance to chase dreams, to thrive, to excel, and not become a product of the system. Luis was very fortunate to have such a strong support system behind me that pushed him to strive for more.
It was because of that support he was able to graduate from Iona College with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. Attending and graduating from Iona College allowed Luis to see the world outside of Brentwood. Throughout his time at Iona, he volunteered at soup kitchens and heard stories from different families about how they got to where they were. Luis was able to set up turkey drop offs during the Thanksgiving season as well as volunteer his time at the local Boys and Girls Club and serve as a mentor to youth. After graduation, Luis went right into youth development, where he was one of the Camp Directors for the Bay Shore YMCA, as well as running an afterschool program. Luis was also the Youth/Teen/Camp Director at the Glen Cove YMCA where he created program for teens (members and non members) to come to the local YMCA and have a place to go after school and Saturday nights.
Luis joined the S.T.R.O.N.G. family in September 2016.
In his free time Luis enjoys playing and watching sports, reading as well as hanging out with friends and family. Luis’ goal has always been to make a difference in this world and that journey continues with S.T.R.O.N.G Youth.
