Intervention Counselor, STRONG University (Nassau)
“Strong youth develop into strong men if the Village is involved.” ~Unknown
Mike grew up with a single mother in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He has worked for numerous nonprofit agencies that include the EOC of Nassau County and the Doe Fund. Through his own life experience and his positions with these organizations, he has gained expertise in working with youth at risk and the homeless population.
Mike acquired his GED in 1989 and is working on re-enrolling in College in the near future. He has received training with the Department of Labor as an HIV/AIDS counselor; Moral Reconation Therapy Training from the Correction Counseling Inc. and 350 hrs of classroom instruction for CASAC (Certified Alcohol & Substance Abuse Counselor). Currently, he is completing a Family Development Credentialing (FDC) training under the supervision of Family Support Long Island at Molloy College.
Mike first met S.T.R.O.N.G.’s Founder, Sergio Argueta and Executive Director, Rahsmia Zatar, while doing youth outreach in the communities of Hempstead, Roosevelt, Uniondale and Freeport. While initially being a great partner of S.T.R.O.N.G., he was invited to join the S.T.R.O.N.G. family as a Violence Intervention counselor in August 2013.
Mike can usually be heard at the S.T.R.O.N.G. office rallying up his team saying: "All hands on deck! The youth need EVERYONE in the community actively involved in getting them on the right track".
