S.T.R.O.N.G. Chapters

School-based prevention

At S.T.R.O.N.G., we believe that every student has the potential to succeed, and our Chapter programs are designed to provide the support and resources necessary to unlock that potential. By working collaboratively with students, families, and schools, our Chapter programs are designed to foster a sense of connection and belonging within the school, community, and family while empowering students to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their potential.

Objectives:

  • Enhance students' sense of connection to their school, community, and family.

  • Foster positive social-emotional development and self-awareness.

  • Equip students with essential life skills to navigate challenges and make positive choices.

  • Promote academic success and personal growth.

  • Cultivate a culture of empathy, responsibility, and resilience among students.

(*Note: "At-risk" is placed in quotation marks to acknowledge the complexity and sensitivity of the term. We recognize that each student's situation is unique, and our programs are tailored to address their individual needs and circumstances.)

Key Components of the Chapter Program:

  1. One-on-One Counseling:

    • Personalized counseling sessions provide students with a safe and supportive space to address individual challenges, set goals, and develop coping strategies.

  2. Psycho-Educational Groups:

    • These groups are focused on promoting positive social-emotional development, equipping students with essential life skills such as communication, problem-solving, and emotional regulation.

  3. Rewards System:

    • We implement a rewards system to reinforce positive behavior and decision-making among students. Recognizing and celebrating their achievements encourages continued growth and development.

  4. Community Service Projects:

    • Engaging in community service projects allows students to contribute positively to their communities while fostering a sense of responsibility and empathy toward others.

  5. Experiential Trips and Activities:

    • Through experiential trips and activities, students have the opportunity to explore new environments, build teamwork skills, and expand their horizons beyond the classroom.

S.T.R.O.N.G. currently has chapters in the Uniondale, Brentwood, Wyandanch, and South Country (Bellport) School Districts.

The Chapters Program is articulated around :

  • Group workshops to address topics such as peer associations, decision making, anger management, respect, community responsibility, empathy, truancy, the value of academics, goal setting, and others. Group work is complemented by one-on-one counseling, advocacy with school personnel, parental engagement, home visits, and referral to additional services when needed.

  • Community service projects and school-wide campaigns to increase awareness of the challenges many families and communities are facing and focus on developing youth’s civic engagement and leadership and team-building skills so they can become active agents of change.

  • After school activities and experiential trips to reinforce and reward goal achievement and positive behavior.
